Appearing last night on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, President Obama popped on stage before his scheduled interview to take part in one of the show’s longrunning gags—”Slow Jam the News.” In the bit, Obama recited portions of his stump speech relating to a scheduled rate increase on federal student loans (the show was filmed at the University of North Carolina) while host Jimmy Fallon feigned soulful commentary and the Roots’ Black Thought punctuated the lines with his crooning.

When Late Night usually runs the “Slow Jam the News” bit, it’s NBC News anchor Brian Williams who joins Fallon on stage for melodic re-enactments of the day’s breaking headlines. It’s not that Obama wasn’t an effective slow-jammer, but we’ve got to say that Williams provides a much more melodic vibe.

Then again, once Obama, Fallon and Black Thought were done rhapsodizing about the White House’s push to keep federally backed college loans at their current rates, Obama dropped his microphone onto the stage. Best we can tell, it’s the first presidential mic-drop in televised history.

During his interview with Fallon, Obama answered a couple questions about the investigation into some Secret Service agents’ activities in Colombia while on duty there earlier this month. The president replied by saying “a couple of knuckleheads”—12, in fact—”shouldn’t detract from what” the Secret Service does by way of protecting him and his family.

Obama also took a few questions that Fallon sourced from Twitter, one of which asked if he had any plans to decriminalize the use of marijuana. The president replied that he did not, and while the conversation with Fallon did not get too deep into the specifics of drug policy, the president’s answer certainly jibes with the Obama administration’s stepped-up enforcement of anti-drug laws.
