First it was taxicabs. Now Metro has gone and raised fares.

Metro’s Board of Directors voted today to approve a slate of fare increases for bus, rail and parking, writes the Post. The increases will go into effect on July 1.

All told, Metro fares will go up around five percent. Base peak fares on trains will increase from $1.95 to $2.10, and the maximum fare will jump from $5 to $5.75. Off-peak fares will go from $1.60 to $1.70 and top out at $3.50. (The peak-of-the-peak surcharge will be eliminated.)

Bus fares will go up by ten cents, but riders who use anything but SmarTrip cards will face a 20-cent surcharge. Parking at Metro lots will go up by a quarter. A new 28-day rail pass will be created (and cost $230), while an existing $9 one-day pass will be replaced by a $14 unlimited one-day pass. The maximum cost for MetroAccess would remain $7.

The fare increases would go to close a $103 million budget deficit for 2013.
