Metro Execs Give Up Company Cars: Three of Metro’s top officials have given up their company cars, reports the Examiner. General Manager Richard Sarles, Chief Financial Officer Carol Dillon Kissal and Assistant General Manager of Access Services Christian Kent are no longer using the cars; now only six of the Metro 16 top officials use the cars, along with an additional 116 Metro employees. Though some employees may need the cars to get from point to point in the sprawling transit network during the day, it’s probably best that Sarles gave up his car—it was only six years ago that a WMATA General Manager was ousted in part because he, well, didn’t even bother to use Metro.

Virginia Parks are for (Gun) Lovers: Your love for Virginia state parks and openly carrying guns no longer have to be mutually exclusive. The Washington Times reports that starting next week Virginia gun-owners will be able to legally and openly carry their guns in state parks. The change has been years in the making; before he became governor, then Attorney General Bob McDonnell opined that the state had no authority to enforce a regulation banning the open carrying of guns in parks. If this change will make you think twice about going to a state park, consider this—it’s already legal for Virginians with conceal carry permits to be armed while they enjoy the great outdoors in state parks, so at least now you’ll see some of the folks who are packing heat.

Metro Police Out in Force This Week: Have you noticed more police on Metro this week? That’s because they are on a “heightened state of vigilance” due to the anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden, reports the Post. Metro officials are reminding riders that if they see something suspicious, they should report it. (WAMU reported recently that not many people are doing so, though.)

Briefly Noted: Good news for the Post: maybe those circulation numbers aren’t that bad … Woman shoots and kills herself in Fairfax Target … Flying from Washington gets more expensive … The Gray Lady covers 14th Street NW … Maryland set to lighten sentences for those caught with small amounts of marijuana … Man arrested for armed robberies at D.C. Safeways … Lots of tips but no arrest in search for former teacher wanted by FBI.

This Day in DCist: On this day in 2011, we got pictures of an overnight celebration of the killing of Osama Bin Laden at the White House and the Anacostia River was found to be one of the most polluted waterways in the U.S. In 2010, a cranky old man went after drunk Georgetown students.
