Michael K. Williams as Omar Little in “The Wire”Want to see Omar Little, Slim Charles and Baltimore Police Det. William “Bunk” Moreland jamming in one place? That’s a ticket we want. Anyone who’s inclined to see such a show should get themselves to New Orleans on May 11, where David Simon, creator of The Wire and Treme, is staging a competition of musical acts pitting the cities illustrated by his two HBO series against each other, WTOP reports.
Wire veterans Michael K. Williams and Wendell Pierce (who also stars on Treme) will host the showdown of bands from Baltimore and New Orleans, proceeds from which will go toward charities benefiting the Crescent City’s musical community.
Representing New Orleans will be two bands, Galactic and the Stooges Brass Band. Lafayette Gilchrist will do the honors for Baltimore, but our neighbor to the north is getting an assist from D.C. in the form of a third Wire star, Anwan “Big G” Glover, who will be performing with his Backyard Band.
Williams, who these days plays Chalky White on Boardwalk Empire but will always be known to us as Omar, will lead the D.C-Baltimore contingent. Pierce, though an integral part of the Charm City saga, is a New Orleans native and will do the honors for his hometown.
“I’m predicting something epic, something with blood on the floor,” Pierce said in a press release, WTOP reported. “I’m just thankful that Michael can’t get his sawed-off shotty past the TSA.”
Glover, in addition to carrying the water for the musical honor of two cities, is also preparing to release his debut solo album. Here’s the video for “Runway Model,” the second single off Transformation, which is due in stores this month:
