Photo by SynappedLast week we told you that a group of animal rights organizations were offering a $1,500 reward for information into the illegal trapping of a raccoon in Northwest D.C. The raccoon was trapped using a method that was made illegal in D.C. two years ago, and had to be euthanized after the fact due to the injuries it suffered.
Today the Washington Humane Society announced that it was upping the ante significantly and offering a $6,000 reward for information leading to an arrest:
Anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible will be offered a $6,000 reward. After an initial $1,000 offering from WHS, three national wildlife groups as well as a private citizen contributed generously to increase this reward fund. Born Free USA has contributed $500; Animal Welfare Institute has contributed $1,000; the Humane Society of the United States has contributed $2,500; and a private citizen has donated an additional $1,000.
“This is one of the worst cases I have seen in years – this animal endured significant pain and suffering for several days,” said Scott Giacoppo, Vice President, External Affairs & Chief Programs Officer, Washington Humane Society. “The reward contributions made by our national and community partners further elevates the importance of this case, and we hope it will help bring the person responsible swiftly to justice.”
Anyone with information about this case should call the Washington Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement Department’s 24-hour emergency line at (202) 723-5730. Information will be kept confidential upon request.
Investigators with the Humane Society, which was chartered by Congress in 1870 to enforce the city’s animal cruelty laws, are currently looking into the case.
