Silo Halo plays at Quarters in MilwaukeeLocal guitar-and-bass trio Silo Halo is on an eight-day tour of the Midwest. We’ve asked the band to send us thoughts and photos from the road.

It’s Monday in Milwaukee, and the cheese gods saw that it was good. I’m more than a little scatterbrained from the aftermath of many free shots of whiskey courtesy of Pete (world’s best bartender) and Aaron (Quarters’ booker) combined with overstimulation from the various musical instruments, adorable cats, toys and child-sized Iron Maiden and Steve Vai shrine at Dixie and The Wizard’s house. There is also a velvet Kenny Rogers and the entire Lynard Skynard anthology on cassette. I slept with my contacts in and my jacket on, but I did manage to take my shoes off. We watched this documentary about Danzig as we were passing out and I kept making Dixie rewind the part where Glenn says, “Mmm, Welcome to my book collection.” I cannot believe how stupid that man is. I mean, I had an idea, but the reality is beyond my wildest imaginings. Have you ever watched any of the music videos made for the first two Danzig albums? Do it now. Despite it all, Devil’s Play Thing is still totally sick and I stand by that.
We drove out of Detroit via Eight Mile Road with no coffee in our systems. It’s sort of a miracle that we were able to pull it off. At one point I got out at a red light to screw the dangling gas cap back on and people were honking at me like I was blocking rush hour traffic in D.C. WTF? I slept most of the way from Detroit to Milwaukee. I think it rained the whole time, but then the sun came out as we were driving into the city. I woke up to the sounds of Greg getting way too excited about driving past the Mars Cheese Castle. We pulled up to Quarters Nightclub Palace, loaded in our gear, and had dinner with Dixie at Stonefly, formerly Onopa, where The Hold Steady opened for IfIHadAHifi in 2004. Chris and I partook of the bar’s very Mustache Ride pale ale. Yes, “Mustache Ride,” you read me correctly.
But the real beer magic happened at Quarters, where we were told that we could have as much free Blatz as we pleased. If you knew me in high school or read the Etxe Records spotlight on TVD a couple of years back, you know that this made me highly stoked, and I swilled cup after cup until the beer snob in me was adequately sedated and no longer noticed how terrible it tasted. Also, did you know that Terry Malts does a really kick-ass cover of “Can’t Tell No One”? I didn’t until Aaron played it last night. Google it now. Resist Her Transistor opened the night of live music with a smoldering set. Those ladies (and gent) seriously rock in the old school sense of the word. Gritty and energetic a la Joan Jett, The Ramones and L7. The Revenge Society followed with beautiful stage presence and vocals from Martha, who I believe to be destined for greatness. We played last, usually a bad idea for a touring band, but Aaron was correct that the Quarters crowd would still be in effect. Then it was Powers and popcorn time. Greg was so happy that the “buttery” flavoring was vegan.
So now we’re off to Dubuque, Iowa to play Monk’s Kaffee Pub and to meet up with my beloved friend Rachel who will be finishing our tour with us, womaning the merch table. More good times, ho!
