A man in Portsmouth, Va. was visited by local police this week after posting a Craigslist ad in which he offered to sell a two-year-old girl for $300, NBC 4 reports. The ad raised the concerns of Craigslist browsers who saw the listing on Wednesday.

Yes, it’s just another one of those classic “WTF?” moments from the great commonwealth of Virginia.

Fortunately, it turned out to be a hoax. After tracing the Internet protocol address that posted the ad, police were led the the home of a 22-year-old man in Portsmouth. No children were found at the location, and the Craigslist post was deemed to be a prank.

The ad, understandably, is long gone from the online classified listing, so we can’t determine what the selling points on a toddler would be. But the man who posted the ad should consider himself lucky. People in other states who have jokingly offered children as commodities to be sold on Craigslist have fared far worse when authorities came knocking.

In February, Wilks Sims of Joplin, Mo. was sentenced to five years in prison for constructing a scam in which he and his wife, Alice, would sell their unborn child over Craigslist to hopeful adoptive parents. Not only was the baby selling highly illegal, Alice Sims was never pregnant in the first place. She was sentenced to four years in prison in February 2011.

Joshua Stagnitto, a Brockport, N.Y. resident, was arrested and charged with falsely reporting an incident in April 2010 after offering his two young children for sale on Craigslist. Even though Stagnitto claimed it was a joke, he was charged after prompting an investigation based on an empty claim.

And in a reversal of the trend of parents who think they’re funnier than they actually are trying to sell their children, a 51-year-old Connecticut man in 2009 attempted to sell his mother and father on the online market. Michael Amatrudo tried to offload his mother and father with this snappy ad copy:

I got lots of use out of these guys over the past 50 years, but it’s time to move on. Will consider trade for newer model, hot blonde under age 40 or an Erector Set in good condition. MUST SEE! Please email or call Michael for additional details and pics. $155.00 OBO.

When a reporter from WNBC contacted Amatrudo about the listing, he said he posted it because he was “bored.”
