Since when were the Washington Redskins this genial? On last night’s edition of The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, it seemed there was no limit to how much Robert Griffin III could charm the audience.

Griffin, still at least three and a half months from taking an actual NFL snap, told host Jay Leno all about his upbringing as a military brat, how he proposed to his fiancée and his colorful sock collection.

In his segment, Griffin recounted the time his father, a 21-year U.S. Army veteran, was recalled into active duty to serve in the Iraq War. The deployment came on Griffin’s birthday when he was in eighth grade. “It was the worst birthday I ever had,” the quarterback said. More swooning from the audience.

Griffin won even more adoration when he showed off his brightly patterned socks, including the burgundy-and-gold pair he wore last month at the NFL Draft. Two things about those socks: The statement stitched into the front reads “Go catch your dream,” and the backs have little capes sewn on. Griffin also presented Jay Leno and his fellow guest, House star Hugh Laurie, with colorful pairs of socks of their own.

Oh, and if this whole “hope of Redskins fans everywhere” thing doesn’t work out, Griffin might have a decent backup as a recording artist. He told Jay Leno that he’s been writing songs for his fiancée, but they weren’t ready to be performed for a broader audience. He did, however, show off another musical talent—beatboxing. And he’s pretty decent at that, too.
