>> Want better cabs in D.C.? You might not get them. A bill mandating broad modernization of the city’s 8,500 cabs is too expensive for the city to afford, reports the Examiner. D.C. CFO Natwar Gandhi has told Councilmember Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3) that the modernization bill she sponsored costs more than he thinks the city could raise with the imposition of a 50-cent surcharge on every ride. Cheh disagrees, saying that she thinks that the surcharge could more than cover the $3.2 million over four years it would cost to move forward on improving the city’s cabs.

>> If you’re a fan of the Nationals or the Orioles and live in North Carolina, good luck getting any of their games on TV. The Washington Times reports that a federal court backed an FCC decision allowing Time Warner to leave the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network off of basic cable packages in the state. The FCC originally justified the decision in part by saying that since the Nats and Orioles were so bad so consistently, there was no reason that North Carolinians—who gravitate more towards the Atlanta Braves—would need or want to watch them play.

>> There’s plenty of gun-related crime in Prince George’s County, and some officials are considering a controversial proposal—instituting a registry for gun offenders. WAMU reports that all members of the county council support a measure that would force convicted gun offenders to register police and submit to home visits, much like registered sex offenders. A vote is expected in June.
