Mark Anderson, the owner of the DC Improv who went missing last month, was found dead in a hotel room in Buckeye, Ariz. on Wednesday. He was 60.

Anderson’s family reported him missing from his home in Oklahoma City on May 12; he was seen a few days later in San Diego at the home of a friend but was not heard from since. Yesterday, housekeepers at a Days Inn in Buckeye found Anderson dead in his hotel room, the Arizona Republic reported.

In addition to the DC Improv, Anderson also operated the comedy club’s franchise in Tempe, Ariz., which closed its doors last week after 23 years. Before Anderson went missing, the Tempe Improv blamed a new competitor in the Phoenix area with stealing comedians and running it out of business.

Kim Thomas, Anderson’s sister-in-law and his family’s spokesperson, told DCist last month that Anderson suffered from an episode verging on a mental break about 16 years ago but had been stable since then. “He’s nicer than most people you’d ever encounter,” Thomas said at the time. “He’s just a very kind man. Does not drink or do drugs.”

But the Republic reported that the Tempe Improv’s failing business took a toll on Anderson’s behavior:

On May 12, Anderson told his family he was leaving to seek financial advice in Dallas and would not be bringing a cellphone for fear someone was tracking him, according to Oklahoma City police.

Authorities said Anderson was reportedly having issues with his business partners and believed prior discussions could lead to him losing the club or criminal prosecutions, according to a police report.

Police in Buckeye say the cause of death is still unknown. Medical examiners in Arizona will conduct an autopsy Friday, the Republic reported.
