Photo by @cml42President Obama ditched the White House dining room today to make an unannounced lunch visit to the Capitol Hill barbecue spot Kenny’s BBQ Smokehouse. On his barbecue run, which was not on the White House’s daily schedule, the president was joined by two active-duty members of the military as well as two D.C. barbers who are part of a federal program promoting active fatherhood.
The barbers, Nurney Mason and Otis “Big O” Gamble, cut hair at Mason’s Barber Shop on H Street NE. They are participants in a Department of Health and Human Services initiative called “Fatherhood Buzz,” in which fathers and sons are encouraged to bond while getting their hair cut.
Obama’s motorcade arrived at Kenny’s shortly after noon. The president “[worked] tables outside, shaking hands” before heading in for lunch. Inside, Obama ordered a platter including beef ribs, collard greens, black-eyed peas, rice and a corn muffin, according to the pool report.
