Photo by Mr. T in DCIn D.C., the Washington Humane Society is charged with investigating violations of animal cruelty laws and rescuing animals in trouble. Much like regular human crimes handled by police, it reports the incidents it deals with. Some are tragic, others enlightening. Below are two that it recently handled, as published by the Post:
Hawk in a daze: 14th and Jefferson streets NW, June 5. Responding to a call about two hawks attacking another, animal control officers found one of the hawks perched on a handrail. The lethargic bird was captured and taken to the society. Virginia Raptors picked up the 2-year-old red-tailed hawk, which was in shock from a concussion.
Weight’s in the way: 21st St. NE, 800 block, May 31. A woman took an obese 7-year-old cat with hair loss to the league’s medical center. It was determined that the skin condition was caused by the cat’s inability to groom. A diet, weight-loss and exercise program was recommended.
