Dish of the Week: Fried egg on a sandwich

Where: Taylor Gourmet, Red Rocks, Birch and Barley

There are few foods in this world not improved by the addition of an egg. But what is one what to do when it’s past the breakfast hour? Slap an egg in your sandwich. Bam, now it’s a brunchwich: breakfast and lunch, united in eggy matrimony.

Aside from being the glue in an unholy marriage of two different meals, the fried egg provides a superior textural experience for an otherwise ho hum sandwich. In short, it’s all about the yolk. The best fried egg sandwiches still have a runny yolk, cooked either sunny side up or over easy. It makes for some messy eating, but it’s worth it for the gooey richness and flavor that the yolk imparts.

Taylor Gourmet started serving egg-laden breakfast hoagies a few months ago, while Birch and Barley features at fried egg BLT on their brunch menu. And while they’re better known for their pizza, I recently enjoyed a lovely breakfast panini at Red Rocks. Stuffed with avocado, tomato, goat cheese, and a pair of perfectly runny fried eggs, it’s everything I wanted out of a Sunday brunch.

Small Bites

Kangaroo BBQ
Kangaroo Boxing Club, the brick-and-mortar restaurant and bar brought to you by the PORC (Purveyors of Rolling Cuisine) food truck, will be making its debut on Tuesday, June 19th. The Columbia Heights restaurant will serve the same meaty barbeque fare found on the PORC truck, in addition to desserts and cocktails, wine, and beer from the small bar.

More Pie, Please
Sweet and savory pies are coming to the Capitol Hill neighborhood. According to Eater, Dangerously Delicious Pies will be opening a location in Union Station starting on June 25th. Meanwhile, Pete’s APizza is eyeing a spot just a few blocks away, at 3rd and Mass Ave NE, for the fourth outpost of their New Haven-style pizza restaurant.

All the Crawfish You Can Eat
Pearl Dive Oyster Palace will be hosting a good old fashioned crawfish boil next Saturday, June 23rd. Sixty dollars will get you all the crawfish you can peel and eat, washed down with all the Abita beer you can swill. Seatings are available from 12-2 pm or 2:30-4:30 pm. Purchase your tickets online or in person at the restaurant.

Best of Sustainable Eats
Good, green eating featured prominently at the Mayor’s Sustainability Awards that were given out last night. Urbana was recognized for the restaurant’s efforts to reduce it’s kitchen’s impact on the environment. They’re rigorous composters, recycle their fryer oil, and harvest herbs from a recently planted rooftop garden. It keeps a streak alive for their eco-conscious Kimpton properties. Firefly, which is also one of their restaurants, took home the Outstanding Achievement by a Restaurant honor last year. Their hotels are also cleaning up. Last year Topaz won, this year it was the Hotel Monaco. The D.C. Farm to School Network, which teaches students about the farm-to-table process, was recognized for their educational work. FRESHFARM markets also won an award for serving D.C.’s neighborhoods.
