>> For over a decade now, Jill Scott has been one of the most revered women in R&B. Given as such, she’s headlining her own “Summer Block Party” tour slated to go down at the Verizon Center. Joining Jilly From Philly will be R&B crooner Kem and hip-hop icons Doug E. Fresh and Salt-n-Pepa. $40.35-$171.05. 7 p.m.
>> When Chuck Brown passed away several weeks ago, D.C.’s music scene lost a significant figure. In tribute to him, Rare Essence will take to the stage being billed as the first go-go act to take to the refurbished Howard Theatre, a title that as supposed to go to Brown before he cancelled due to illness. As a special added bonus, hip-hop storyteller supreme, Slick Rick, will be performing his hits with the backing of New Orleans’ The Soul Rebels Brass Band. $25. 8 p.m.
>> In the past few weeks, Oddisee has released two projects, Odd Renditions and People Hear What They See. To mark the latter’s debut, the lauded producer/rapper will come home for a show at the Montserrat House where he’ll be backed by a live band with DJ Jerome Baker III also spinning tunes. Free. 8 p.m.
Friday:
>> Eli “Paperboy” Reed comes from suburban Boston and attended the University of Chicago but is well-versed in Southern soul music from the 1960s. He’ll be performing at the U Street Music Hall. $12. 7 p.m.
>> Angela Winbush‘s compositions in the 1980s like “Angel” were classic slow jams while tunes such as “I Love You More” were popular for sampling purposes. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, she’ll be performing two shows each night at Blues Alley. $43. 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
>> DJ Soul Call Paul will be spinning a whole lot of soul during his”James Brown vs. Tina Turner vs. Stevie Wonder” set at the Black Cat‘s backstage. $5. 9:30 p.m.
>> Subcontinental Drift has been hosting open mic sessions for several years and is now launching “U Turn,” a party featuring global dance music. Tonight at Liv, DJs v:shal kanwar, Beta-G and Inda Nile will be selecting the tunes. $10. 10 p.m.
>> Legendary soulful house DJ and producer Timmy Regisford is one of the best to ever do it, having done tracks for the likes of Stevie Wonder and New Edition, among others. He’ll be at “Red Fridays” at U Street Music Hall with an opening set by Chris Burns. $10. 10 p.m.
Saturday:
>> DJ Dredd‘s “1958” party is back to celebrate three music megastars born that year: Madonna, Prince and Michael Jackson. Rock and Roll Hotel will serve as the venue. $13. 9 p.m.
>> The “Axel F” party makes its customary 4th Saturday of the month appearance at Liv tonight. DJs Jahsonic, Stylus and Adrian Loving will be spinning jams from the late-1970s through late-1980s that fit within this month’s “roller boogie” theme. $5 before midnight / $10 after midnight. 10 p.m.
Monday:
>> The Shaolin Jazz Project proved to be one of the more innovative albums to be released last year with its melding of Wu-Tang Clan acapellas and classic jazz compositions. At Blues Alley, DJ 2-Tone Jones will lead a band in creating a live version of Shaolin Jazz for two shows. $18. 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
