TUESDAY

The Hives are not only still a band, but they still know how to put on an exciting live show filled with mugging from supreme egomaniac showstopper “Howlin’” Pelle Almquivst. We’re just a little confused about one thing and that is how they chose their openers. FIDLAR and Flesh Lights are as garage rock as can be, with FIDLAR in particular embodying the surf riot shambolic drunkenness that seems diametrically opposed to the costumed showmen of The Hives. Oh well. Should be a good show at the 9:30 Club if oddly matched. Sold Out, 8:00 p.m.

>> Black Cat: Scott H Biram and Lydia Loveless. $12, 8:00 p.m.

>> Velvet Lounge: Teen Mom, Fatty Acids, Sat. Nite Duets. $10 for 18+ and $8 for 21+, 9:00 p.m.

WEDNESDAY

We’ll admit that we were a little disenchanted with Modest Mouse last time they hit the 9:30 Club, but in all fairness, they also made us wait a long time to watch them—and anything short of a religious experience or a Roots set wasn’t going to work. We’ll give them a second (and third chance) as tonight is their first of two nights back at the 9:30 Club with Talkdemonic. Both shows are Sold Out. 7:00 p.m.

>> Black Cat: She Keeps Bees, Midtown Dickens, Cigarette. $10, 8:00 p.m.

THURSDAY

We’ll knock on wood that the gray skies of doom stay out of Tenleytown so that we can see some of our favorite local acts during this first week of Fort Reno. We’re excited to see Brenda for the first time, we just interviewed Daoud Tyler-Ameen of Art Sorority for Girls and this current lineup of Edie Sedgwick is the best one we’ve seen. Free, 7:00 p.m.

>> Fillmore: Colla Parte, Lost Civilizations, the Plums, and Blue Sausage Infant improv collaboration with Pilesar and Anthony Pirog. $15, 7:30 p.m.

The Hot Snakes will be at the Rock and Roll Hotel this Friday. Press photo courtesy of Swami Records website.

FRIDAY

When San Diego punks Hot Snakes announced some reunion shows last year after a six year absence, we waited with baited breath to see if any future shows would make it to the East Coast. Granted we’ve had bands like Obits (which includes Hot Snakes singer ) and The Soft Pack (another San DIego band with a deadpan vocalist) to tide us over, but Hot Snakes has the brilliant combination of disturbingly dark lyrics about death and heavy garage riffs that still have a little bit of levity. I mean, how many bands can make you bounce to a song entitled, “Who Died”? They’ll be at Rock and Roll Hotel with History Repeated and Last Year’s Men. Sold Out, 9:00 p.m.

>> U Street Music Hall: Eli “Paperboy” Reed, Lily and the Parlour Tricks. $12, 7:00 p.m

SATURDAY

Okay, so we sort of jumped the gun as to when we thought the Mynabirds would be in town. What can we say, we’re excited to see the return of D.C. ex-pat Laura Burhenn as this new project of hers has become increasingly more interesting. Sean Bones and Edie Sedgwick open the show at the Black Cat. $12, 9:00 p.m.

>> Velvet Lounge: Protect-U (improv set), Tresors, Collin Crowe. $8, 9:30 p.m.

SUNDAY

Although we had a large chunk of time last summer to see Jean Cook record with Beauty Pill at Artisphere for the Immersive Ideal, we do not get to see her perform in earnest nearly often enough. She’ll be on violin and loops tonight collaborating with percussionist David Brown at the Historic Bohemian Caverns (at 2001 11th Street) and experimental noise-jazz guitar and cello duo Janel and Anthony will join them perform. $15, 7:00 p.m.
