The Tivoli Fountain in Columbia Heights.

As of yesterday, D.C.’s public pools are operating on a summer schedule. And with the heat that we’re expecting this week, an easily accessible public pool couldn’t come at a better time. Sometimes, though, a pool either isn’t available, is too far away or just won’t do. You might have kids that want to splash around for a few hours, or you just might want to cool down on an especially muggy day. Whatever the case, these are three fountains that are worth visiting:

Tivoli Fountain: Formally known as the Columbia Heights Plaza Fountain or Resonance Fountain, the Tivoli Fountain opened in 2009 as part of the redevelopment and redesign of the heart of Columbia Heights. Since then, it has become a de facto gathering place for the neighborhood—and the fountain itself a huge hit with local kids.

Georgetown Waterfront Park Fountain: It took years of planning and construction, but the Georgetown Waterfront Park was finally finished last year. As part of its final phase of construction, a new fountain just across from the Loews Theatre was built. Water arcs gracefully over rubber flooring in the base of the fountain, and it has been a popular attraction with kids and adults alike on hot days.

Yards Park: One of the newer parks in the city, Yards Park opened in 2010 and has since been the subject of rave reviews. Nestled behind the Department of Transportation and in the shadow of Nationals Park, Yards Park features a shin-deep fountain and a waterfall—and it has a great view of the Anacostia River.

D.C. Spray Parks: If you don’t want to feel like you’re covertly sneaking into one of the aforementioned fountains, D.C. runs a number of spray parks that might be a better alternative.

There are plenty of other fountains in D.C., but the standard disclaimers apply: most of them weren’t designed for anything more than looking pretty, so don’t go diving into the Dupont Circle Fountain or Navy Memorial Fountain without knowing that the water doesn’t get cleaned all that often, nor does it really circulate much.
