Photo by Maryland Route 5Yesterday a Prince of Petworth reader observed that Lauriol Plaza had posted a sign saying that it would no longer be serving its half-pitchers of margaritas. Citing an “ABC [Alcoholic Beverage Control Board] provision,” the popular Mexican eatery informed that customers would have to buy margaritas by the glass or full pitcher from now on.
We put in some calls, and it turns out that it’s true—no more half-pitchers for you. But it’s not because D.C. specifically mandated it, but rather because the restaurant noticed that some crafty borrachos were using the half-pitchers as single-serving drinks.
“We think it’s just too much alcohol for one person,” said a manager this afternoon after confirming that the decision was the restaurant’s. She said that they had noticed fights and other margarita-fueled mayhem breaking out, and added that the restaurant has also discontinued pitcher sales after 11 p.m.
Margaritas by the glass are listed at $6.50, while the full pitcher sells for $29.95. The now-discontinued half-pitcher—roughly three glasses of margarita—provided the best bang for your buck, at $14.95.
