TUESDAY
Nobody embodies the duality of fragility and power as well as Fiona Apple. All of her songs are poetic and many on The Idler Wheel… have at least undertones of darkness and sadness if not overtones of very specific stories. The stream of consciousness queen has already sold out one show in D.C. this year and now she’s back at the Warner Theatre tonight with Blake Mills. Check Craigslist for tickets. 8 p.m.
>> >> Comet Ping Pong: Mean Jeans, Shirks, Hollywood. $10, 10 p.m.
WEDNESDAY
America Hearts is finishing up their residency of Singles Club shows at the Black Cat just in time for them to head out on a West Coast tour with the band on tonight’s bill, Olivia & the Mates. We may even ask them to do some tour diaries. Who knows? Speaking of features that we’re going to bring back, we swear, come early to see former Three Stars subjects, The Mean Season. $8, 8:00 p.m.>> Wolf Trap: Norah Jones, Sasha Dobson. $50 in house/$30 lawn, 8:00 p.m.
>> DC9: Retox (featuring Justin Pearson of The Locust), Regents, The Mostly Dead. $10, 8:30 p.m.
THURSDAY
Calling the Paste Magazine target audience: this show is built for you. Brandi Carlile and Josh Ritter are both formidable Americana songwriters so their double bill at Wolf Trap should make for a night of heartfelt rocking and heartfelt thinking. The Lumineers open. $40 under the roof, $30 lawn, 7 p.m.
>> Fort Reno: Seamonsters, Treble Lifter, The Admins. Free, 7 p.m.
>> Red Palace: Bombadil, Pree. $8, 8:30 p.m.
FRIDAY
Piano-pop-meets-epic-prog-guitar trio Jukebox the Ghost no longer really claims to be a D.C. band, (C’mon guys, you haven’t lived here in years) but they still hold a special place in our hearts since they met each other and started playing music while attending GWU. They’ll be back at the 9:30 Club with Savoir Adore and Bright Moments. $15, 8 p.m.>> Velvet Lounge: Hammer No More the Fingers, More Humans, Mittenfields. $8, 9:30 p.m.
>> Comet Ping Pong: Quilt, The Tender Thrill, Young Magic. $10, 10 p.m.
SATURDAY
They might well have written the song of the summer (Carly Rae Jepsen, Who? Icona Pop, What?) and their wild bursts of energy during their anthemic live shows and have impressed several of us on the DCist staff. Plus, at one of their previous visits to the Rock and Roll Hotel, they put Alex Ovechkin on the guest list. Japandroids will probably need to put you on the guest list if you’re going to get into this show with Cadence Weapon: the show is sold out. 8 p.m.
>> U Sreet Music Hall: Flosstradamus. $10, 10 p.m.
>> Black Cat: Futurebirds, White Violet. $15, 9 p.m.
SUNDAY
Are you bummed out because you have to go back to work tomorrow and the summer air keeps turning into a gaseous version of a washcloth on your face? Black Clouds are banking on that and the former are ready to get bummed out with you. The local instrumental trio plays with dynamics that venture between the grandiose and the weird and they’ll be headlining tonight’s Black Cat show with Gunny Sack and Torild. $8, 8 p.m.
