No, that’s not a Prince of Petworth question. It’s a legitimate concern for some in the Washington area today.
Over the course of the day, residents of suburban communities in both Maryland and Virginia have complained of smelling smoke in the air. People between Lorton, Va. and Silver Spring have reported an acrid, smoky scent wafting through, WTOP reports.
The smell, it turns out, is coming from a pair of wildfires currently ablaze in George Washington and Shenandoah national parks, according to Fairfax County fire officials. And with a recent shift in wind speed and direction, the fumes from the fires are being blown closer to D.C.’s bedroom communities.
And, for anyone planning on spending the weekend before the July 4 holiday in the Blue Ridge Mountains, WTOP reports that some of Shenandoah’s trails are closed off while firefighters combat the blazes.
