Virginia and Maryland will see several laws take into effect this Sunday, July 1. “Women seeking an abortion in Virginia will be required to get an ultrasound at least 24 hours before the abortion…Among Maryland’s new environmental laws, the state’s 10 largest jurisdictions will begin collecting fees for storm water runoff based on the amount of a property’s pavement. ” [WTOP]

A mother of a victim in last Monday’s day camp shooting speaks out. “‘He’s scared of firecrackers, now, or fireworks,’ the 6-year-old’s mother said. ‘Any type of loud noise he’s screaming, and I guess it is scary for him.’” [NBC4]

Head of Prince George’s County Public Schools is headed to the City of Brotherly Love. “[William R. Hite, Jr.] who has worked in Prince George’s County for six years, was one of two finalists in a nationwide search to replace former Philadelphia School superintendent Arlene Ackerman. He is expected to leave the 123,000-student system later this year for one of the largest and troubled school systems in the nation” [The Post]

Jellyfish population may surge in the Chesapeake Bay. “‘The first jellyfish appeared on June 7 this year, which is a bit early,’ says [University of Maryland researcher Maggie] Sexton. Usually they come out almost a month later. Sometimes they even wait till August. But not this year.” [WAMU]
