Apologies for bumming you out with another awful dog story, but we’re sure authorities would appreciate any tips on the suspect in this case. The Humane Society of the United States s offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to a conviction in the case of a dog in Fort Washington, Md. that was set on fire and killed last month.

On June 20, Prince George’s Police responded to a call on the 12500 block of Proxmire Drive in Fort Washington reporting an animal on fire, according to a Humane Society press release. Officers discovered the charred remains of a dog, which appeared to be an older male Chihuahua.

No description of a suspect or suspects has yet been made in this horrifying scene, but the Humane Society is hoping for a speedy resolution.

“Setting an animal on fire is a truly heinous act—and a serious crime in Maryland,” Tami Santelli, the group’s Maryland state director, said in the press release. Santelli told DCist that the maximum penalty for this act is three years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

“There’s such a clear link between animal cruelty and other forms of violence,” Santelli said in a phone interview. “Someone who’s willing to set an animal on fire clearly has a disregard for life.”

The Prince George’s Police Department’s animal management division is handling the criminal investigation, and can be reached with tips at (301) 780-7241.
