A D.C. police officer has been placed on administrative duty while he is being investigated for making a threat earlier this week against Michelle Obama. The Washington Post reports that the officer, who was not identified, had been part of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Special Operations Division, which provides in-town escorts to the Obama family and other dignitaries.
The officer, who served as a motorcycle escort to White House motorcades, was allegedly discussing threats against the first family with some of his colleagues on Wednesday morning. It was at that point that the officer described how he would shoot the first lady, the Post reports:
During that conversation, the officials said, the officer allegedly said he would shoot the First Lady and then used his phone to retrieve a picture of the firearm he said he would use. It was not immediately clear what type of firearm was allegedly shown.
An officer overheard the alleged threat and reported it to a police lieutenant at the Division, who immediately notified superiors, the officials said.
In a statement to the Post, MPD spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump declined to say much about the officer. “We received an allegation that inappropriate comments were made. We are currently investigating the nature of those comments” she said.
The U.S. Secret Service is also looking into the matter, according to the Post.
