President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will be attending tonight’s exhibition games between the men’s and women’s basketball teams from the United States and Brazil.
Tonight’s matches, which are some of the last tune-ups before the Olympic Games begin next week in London, will feature the full lineups of the U.S. and Brazilian national teams. Yep, the Dream Team, that rogues gallery of the superstars who ruin the NBA for the rest of us, is in town.
Kevin Love, Kobe Bryant and, of course—the betrayer of Cleveland himself—LeBron James will be on the Verizon Center hardwood tonight, showing off their Olympic-caliber skills for the president, vice president and tens of thousands of fans.
The women’s game tips off at 5:30 p.m., but Obama, who spent much of the day campaigning in Ohio, is not scheduled to arrive at the arena until 7:10 p.m, meaning he’ll likely miss most of that contest. The men’s game starts at 8 p.m. and during the game, Obama will visit ESPN in the broadcast booth.
Presumably, Obama and Biden, along with much of the rest of the crowd, will be cheering for Team USA. This is, however, a mistake, and a snub to our local talent pool. The U.S. men’s basketball team, while an impressive lineup of divas and primadonnas who screw over their hometowns (OK, fine just one of them did that), features zero members of the Washington Wizards.
Now, you can’t blame Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski for snubbing the team that finished with the NBA’s second-worst record, but the Wizards will be represented at the game in the form of Nenê, who is Brazil’s starting center.
If you’re going the game, you could be patriotic. Or, you could put local loyalty ahead of the national interest and side with Brazil. No one should feel compelled to cheer for a team that features LeBron James.
Side note: With Obama and Biden in attendance, getting around Chinatown tonight is going to be more difficult than usual, with several streets around the Verizon Center set to close down and extra security to be deployed throughout the venue.
Editor’s note: This Olympic anti-Americanism applies only to men’s basketball. In all other sports, we will be pulling for U.S. athletes. Blame James.
