The ’90s are back. After spending ten years rehashing the 80’s and late ’70s it is finally time to revisit a genre mostly associated with teen angst—emo. While emo has ties to D.C.’s hardcore scene the bands that took the genre to what it is known for today came much later and were less aggressive. The Promise Ring, who broke up in 2002, reformed last year after a well-deserved victory lap from singer Davey von Bohlen’s other project Cap’n Jazz. Back in the day, The Promise Ring were the kings of the genre, making tunes about relationships and disillusionment to a jangly and sometimes grungy soundtrack.

Now, reformed ten years later, the band is back and ready to knock the dust off their classics, revising the songs written in their twenties that still hold up. Today’s song of the day is the first cut “Happiness Is All The Rage” off their despised at the time, but best third album Very Emergency. Time has served the record well, as each of the ten tracks are power-pop genius. “Happiness Is All The Rage” is a catchy track that will transport you back to the time where you didn’t know how the world worked but were ready to take it on all on your own. So don your Buddy Holly glasses and see the band play the 9:30 Club tomorrow.

The Promise Ring play tomorrow July 20th with Title Tracks at 9:30 Club. Tickets are $25.
