The fancy word for massive and mandatory federal budget cuts is the endgame of a deficit-cutting process on which Congress and the White House failed to come to an agreement, and with federal spending accounting for as much as 60 percent of D.C.’s economy, WAMU reports the District could suffer quite the blow when the cuts start happening in January. Natwar Gandhi, the District’s chief financial officer, says the reductions could be significant.
