Last week, U.S. Olympic swimmer and Internet crush object Ryan Lochte caused a bit of a retch when, in one of his typically dull interviews, he admitted to doing something in the pool that is best left unsaid. Or, you know, not done at all.
“I think there’s just something about getting into chlorine water that you just automatically go,” Lochte told NBC’s Ryan Seacrest. (Hey, if you’re gonna cop to soiling the water, who better to admit it to than Seacrest?)
Pretty gross, right? Well, Lochte got some back-up today from his teammate Michael Phelps. The Baltimore native and the most accomplished individual athlete in Olympic history told The Wall Street Journal that Lochte’s habit, while seeming gross to the casual swimmer, is typical for their sport.
“I think everybody pees in the pool,” Phelps told the Journal. “It’s kind of a normal thing to do for swimmers. When we’re in the water for two hours, we don’t really get out to pee.”
Like Lochte, Phelps said the chlorination makes it OK. “Chlorine kills it so it’s not bad.”
Well, Phelps has 13 more gold medals than Lochte, so we guess we’ll take his word for it. Here’s his interview with the Journal. The pool-peeing comments start about 3:30 in:
