It’s been a while since we’ve heard new music from Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, but don’t fret for much longer. Her new record, Sun, drops September 4. Marshall broke up with her boyfriend Giovanni Ribisi, cut her hair and recorded the LP by herself in many locations before decamping in Paris to work with Philippe Zdar, who did the final mix. Sun’s 11 songs are all stand-outs and the first track, “Cherokee,” with its warped guitars and early (i.e., good!) Liz Phair vibe prove Cat Power still has it. Retreating from the dirty Delta blues arrangements of The Greatest, “Cherokee” is a focused track along the lines of We Are Free. Marshall just announced tour dates. She’ll be in D.C. on October 22 with a set at the 9:30 Club. Tickets are on sale now, and I think they’ll go fast.
Cat Power plays Monday, October 22 at the 9:30 Club. Tickets $40. Ouch.
