D.C.-area schools are re-opening in the next few weeks so drivers need to slow down in school zones. “In case you need more incentive to slow down there’s this statistic. Prince George’s county’s police department issued 349,233 tickets from automated cameras in school zones during the 2011-2012 school year, according to AAA. They cost the violator $40 each and netted the county over $5 million.” [WTOP]
Prosecutors ruled that a Maryland man who allegedly killed his housemate and ate his body parts is incompetent to stand trial. “Harford County State’s Attorney Joseph I. Cassilly wrote to the judge in the case Monday saying prosecutors have reviewed a report by a psychiatric hospital and agree Alexander Kinyua is incompetent to stand trial. The 21-year-old Joppatowne man has been undergoing a competency evaluation at the Clifton T. Perkins Hospital.” [AP]
Republican U.S. Senate candidate George Allen highlighted cuts in defense spending Saturday while campaigning in Northern Virginia. “Allen was speaking about sequestration, the looming drastic automatic cuts in defense that the nation, and specifically Virginia, will face at the start of the year.” [WJLA]
