Shoegaze is the genre that never really went away. Indie rock has taken many different styles since the ’80s, but the dreamy guitar lines, buried vocals and bedroom stylings of shoegaze still remain with many bands. Tonight at the Black Cat Screen Vinyl Image brings its more distorted version of shoegaze—as filtered through Suicide and Jesus and Mary Chain—while openers Airiel take the traditional route. Airiel has been around since 1997 but their output has been quite restrained. Originally a duo, the band has expanded to a foursome, and while it only has one full length to its name, the band just released its fifth EP. Today’s song of the day, “Flashlight Tag,” is a slick piece of shoegaze pop that sounds as if it could’ve emerged any time between now and the late ’80s.

Airiel plays tonight at the Black Cat with Screen Vinly Image and Dot Dash. Tickets are $8.
