NBC4’s Tom Sherwood—or is that Jim Vance?—is covering the Democratic National Convention with Tom Sherwood. WHAT IS GOING ON? HEAD EXPLODES! (Photo by @gryshardygal

As NBC News ended its broadcast of the Democratic National Convention last night, NBC4’s late local newscast opened the show by throwing things right back to Charlotte, N.C.

With so many D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia Democrats attending the convention, NBC4 sent two of its top talent—weekday anchor Jim Vance and political reporter Tom Sherwood—to Charlotte. And as last night’s 11 p.m. broadcast opened, it fell to Vance to introduce the evening’s post-convention wrap-up.

Only, maybe it wasn’t Jim Vance? The chyron, photographed by a savvy viewer, read “Tom Sherwood.” And after Vance’s intro, the camera swung left to reveal…Tom Sherwood! Is everyone slowly becoming Tom Sherwood? Is this just part of a buildup toward a particularly heated press conference with Mayor Vince Gray in which every reporter in the room, in Spartacus-like bravery, stands up and says, “I’m Sherwood”?

OK, sometimes chyrons can get the better of TV news producers. Heck, just in January WUSA mistakenly implied that in addition to seeking the presidency, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was also in the hunt for the Ward 5 D.C. Council seat left vacant by Harry Thomas Jr. Anything’s possible!

Anyway, here’s the online version of NBC4’s Democratic National Convention coverage, with everyone’s identity restored:
