>> Mayor Vince Gray may have had a quiet August, but the federal investigation focused on his 2010 campaign isn’t over. The Post reports that federal prosecutors said yesterday at a status hearing for a former Gray associate who pleaded guilty earlier this year to campaign finance violations that the investigation remains open. Two other people linked to the troubled campaign—and its $653,000 shadow counterpart—are set to be sentenced this fall.
>> More in the ballad of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority: the Examiner reports that board member Dennis Martire charged the agency with expensive business class plane tickets so that a female companion could join him as part of a 2-for-1 deal. All told, Martire had the agency pay for tickets costing between $6,200 and $9,500. The board will vote today on a new travel policy for its board members, coming in the wake of lavish spending on trips, both national and international.
>> Plenty of non-Virginians are getting Virginia permits to carry concealed weapons, reports WAMU. By taking an online test and passing a background check, some 1,632 non-residents have been able to obtain concealed-carry permits this year; the permits are valid in 26 states. Gun control advocates worry that the lax standards are allowing gun owners from outside the commonwealth to skip their own states’ requirements for the permits.
