A post-dinner treat with Sugar Magnolia’s almond macaroon with brown sugar sandwich

Dish of the Week: Ice cream sandwich

Where: Sugar Magnolia

There are ice cream sandwiches with cookies that are too hard to enjoy.

There are ones that have a medium firmness that can be tolerable to bite.

Then, there are those with cookies that instantly melt in your mouth along with the cream filling. Just the way ice cream sandwiches should be enjoyed.

Last night, I had the pleasure of finally biting into this perfection at Sugar Magnolia, the tiny sweet shop adjacent to parent restaurant Ripple in Cleveland Park. The storefront currently offers five different types, such as the waffles with maple bacon ice cream to the almond macaroon with brown sugar ice cream. I was treated to the latter dessert. In a phone conversation today, pastry chef Allison Reed said it took weeks to match the softness of macaroons to the ice cream filling.

Be sure to look out for another creation—a sandwich with cinnamon-flavored ice cream.
