>> More than 90 D.C. police officers have been arrested for a variety of crimes since 2009, reports the Examiner. The number of arrests put D.C. above other cities with bigger police forces; while 19 D.C. cops (of 3,800) have been arrested this year, only six of Philadelphia’s 6,600 police officers have suffered similar fates. Police union officials say that the department’s leadership is to blame by discontinuing a standards and training board and being too lax about hiring standards.

>> U.S. Attorney for D.C. Ron Machen has certainly become one of the most feared men in D.C. politics, but the Washington Times notes that his future—and that of the investigations into local politicians that he’s launched—could depend on what happens in the November presidential election. While Machen has received plaudits for his work in the office—the largest such attorney’s office in the country—he would still likely be replaced if Republican challenger Mitt Romney won. That possibility raises the question over whether or not a successor would put similar resources into fighting corruption at the local level.

>> If you were stuck on a MARC train every day to get to and from work, you’d eventually strike up a conversation with recognizable faces around you. But the Post reports that those conversations have risen to a new level with the creation of cliques of commuting chums using their time on the rails to crack jokes and catch up. Some of these cliques have even taken the conversation a step further with afternoon happy hours, booze included. And just like the cliques you dealt with in high school, these ones can be exclusive.

Briefly Noted: Closing D.C. public schools cost way more than expected … Virginia Republican wants to scrap corporate income taxMore cracks found in ICC bridges … Shooting of handcuffed man by PG County police officer likely to go to grand jury … Death of D.C. police officer could be linked to off-duty stabbing five years ago … Improvements planned for Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport … D.C.’s McKinley Tech gets Blue Ribbon status.

This Day in DCist: On this day in 2010, Shadow Senator Michael D. Brown said he was close to unseating Councilmember Phil Mendelson (D-At Large) and puppies endorsed a D.C. mayoral contender. In 2009, D.C. officials clarified that ghost bikes can only remain for 30 days.
