It’s time for your daily Two Minutes Panda. Well, today’s clip is only 15 seconds. In a clip shot this morning on the Panda Cam, National Zoo staff caught Mei Xiang grooming her newborn cub.
The baby panda, which still remains out of the public view, makes more noises not unlike those emitted by a rubber bath toy or rusty door hinge. In the video, Mei Xiang can be seen lifting the cub with her mouth, setting it down in the grass and then cleaning it. According to the zoo’s staff, everything is going well:
Keepers continue to be encouraged by the cub’s activity and vocalizations—two signs that it is healthy. Mei Xiang is able to sleep for brief periods but promptly cradles, grooms and nurses her cub when it vocalizes. Zoo staff and volunteers are diligently monitoring both bears over the Panda Cam, minimizing disturbances around their den.
