The D.C. government—the hulking behemoth that it is—will now power its bureaucratic inefficiencies with nothing but wind power, according to a statement from Mayor Vince Gray.

The D.C. Department of General Services recently signed a new contract for electricity for the city’s buildings, increasing the amount provided by green sources from 50 to 100 percent. The city annually spends $52 million on powering its government buildings—enough to power 90,000 homes—and the new contract allows D.C. to save 43 percent as compared to the previous contract. D.C. has been purchasing wind power since 2009.

According to the EPA, D.C.’s green power usage of more than one billion kWh saves the same amount of carbon dioxide as that emitted by 141,000 passenger vehicles each year. Because of the city’s advances, the EPA announced yesterday that D.C. had won an award for a second year for using the most green power annually of any city in the U.S.
