Frankie Rose was the drummer of The Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts and the Dum Dum Girls, but her true passion is song-writing. Though she has slayed on the kit, Rose’s legacy will forever be her adventurous solo career. Her first record with the band The Outs was in the vein of garage rock like the scene she came up in. This year’s Interstellar, however, was a risk that undeniably payed off. Making move towards shoe-gaze and more—ahem—interstellar arrangements, Rose found a sound that mixes the more pop friendly sounds of The Cure with textures like My Bloody Valentine while still keeping some of the garage rock attitude.
Today’s song of the day is the album’s dreamy title track “Interstellar.” The song opens with a swirl of synths and Rose’s voice, heavily auto-tuned sounding like a lost astronaut trying to find her way home. When the pounding drums chic in the song reaches take-off and it is not only the perfect opener for the album but also a great track.
