FRIDAY
MOVIES: National Geographic’s All Roads Film Festival is back, featuring stories and talent from vibrant, diverse, indigenous cultures. The full schedule of events is here. For other movies you should probably see this weekend, check this week’s Popcorn & Candy.
EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC: If you’re into experimental or off-kilter music, head down to the Atlas Performing Arts Center (1333 H Street NE) starting tonight for the Sonic Circuits Festival. A festival pass will set you back $130, or you can buy tickets for blocks of performances.
SATURDAY
FESTIVALS: In the month of continuous festivals, today is the Southwest ArtsFest. Head down to the neighborhood from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. for food, workshops, performances, and more. The schedule of events is here. Free. If you want something a little more food-oriented, try the Sixth Annual Taste of Friendship Heights from noon to 5 p.m. Free, tickets required to purchase food and drink. Also starting today is the Green Festival.
OPERA: It may not be as moving as seeing The Boss live, but head down to Nationals Park tonight for the Washington National Opera’s Opera in the Outfield, Mozart’s Don Giovanni will be simulcast on a large screen at 7 p.m., and there will be pre-performance events—including stage fighting demonstrations!—starting at 5 p.m. Free.
CYCLING IN CRYSTAL CITY: Hop on your bike and head down to Crystal City (2345 Crystal Drive) from 4-10 p.m. for the Diamond Derby, a challenging race course in an underground parking garage and after-party. Racing will cost you, but simply hanging out and watching won’t.
PREP FOR HALLOWEEN: Get a jump on your Halloween costume by shopping the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Costume Sale at the STC Studio (507 8th Street SE) this Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Items for sale will include shoes, hats, masks, dresses, doublets, armor, cloaks, and jewelry, and range in price from $1 to the hundreds.
ALLEY OF DOOM: We told you about this already, but you should seriously go. 1-4 p.m. Free.
SUNDAY
ANOTHER FESTIVAL: Last week we told you to try Turkish coffee, and what better place than at the Turkish Festival? The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and will include culture, cuisine and yes, coffee. Head down to Freedom Plaza for the festivities.
BEACH-GOING: Close out the warmer months with a trip to the beach. Well, the New York Avenue Beach Bar (645 New York Avenue NW), at least. The bar is bidding farewell to summer with one last party featuring DJs, food trucks, games, and plenty of drinks. 3-10 p.m. Free, but RSVP here.
