If Major League Baseball was looking to make some discrete statement about the federal government, it succeeded admirably—by scheduling a 1 p.m. home game between the Nats and St. Louis Cardinals tomorrow, you can bet that even less than usual be done throughout the city’s offices tomorrow.
According to the Post’s Nikita Stewart, Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) has already said that he’ll adjourn a planned hearing as soon as the game starts and finish it after it ends. Just about everyone else will be listening to the game on the radio, or following tweet by tweet.
The announcement of the afternoon game set off howls of protest on Twitter yesterday, with Nats fans complaining that the team’s first playoff appearance in 79 years should have been given prime time billing and not exiled to the MLB Network, which not all local cable subscribers have. Yankees fans, on the other hand, defended their night game, saying that no amount of Nats history will best the Yankees popularity and ability to attract viewers. Nor surprisingly, there’s a petition floating around for MLB to put the game on local television.
On the upside, Metro will be open when the game ends. On the downside, it will let out just as rush hour starts, ensuring even worse traffic than usual on South Capitol Street.
Council member Jack Evans will recess tomorrow’s hearing on the tax office for the #Nats at noon and will reconvene at 5. #NATITUDE at JAWB.
