Menomena’s 2010 album Mines could’ve been the band’s last. It wasn’t just tumultuous to record, but the entire situation caused vocalist Brent Knopf to leave and focus on his own Romona Falls project. It is a great surprise that the band hasn’t stopped, but only gotten stronger. Danny Seim and Justin Harris have not only picked up the pieces, but they’ve made it seem like nothing has changed. Moms, the band’s fourth album, is a remarkable record full of songs that are bitter and biting—but many are full of a little bit of hope. Today’s song of the day, “Heavy is as Heavy Does,” one of Justin Harris’s songs, is a piano-driven number about the relationship between Harris and his father.
Menomena plays tonight with PVT at the Black Cat. Tickets are $15.
