MOVIES: Why be scared for just one day in October, when AFI Silver Theatre’s (8633 Colesville Road Silver Spring MD) Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival offers the opportunity to be freaked out for nine? Tonight the film fest that will make you sleep with the light on for the next two weeks kicks off with a screening of Excision, about a teen girl who falls into “erotic fantasies of flesh, death and salvation.” The film will be followed by a Q&A session with its director Richard Bates, Jr. 8:00 p.m. $11.50 each film, or $100 for an all festival pass.

COMMUNITY CONVERSATION: WAMU radio host Kojo Nnamdi invites the public to discuss “issues of the day” with him at All Souls Unitarian Church (1500 Harvard Street NW) tonight, as part of the continuing Kojo In Your Community series. 5:30 p.m. Free and no reservations needed.

SCIENCE: National Geographic Live (1600 M Street NW) welcomes Nobel Prize Winner in Physics Adam Reiss and 2011 National Geographic Explorer of the Year Kenny Broad to discuss “Blue Holes & Dark Energy: Mapping the Unknown.” This talk is the first in a three part series on big ideas. 7:00 p.m. Tickets: $22.
