Photo by {ryan}While crime doesn’t happen often in Metro—6.09 incidents per million riders—it has increased over the last year due to a jump in the number of thefts of electronic devices.
According to a Metro security report published this week, there were 749 robberies on Metro through September, up from the 593 robberies during the same time in 2011. Of those robberies, 369 were of the snatch-and-grab variety, up from 298 the year prior.
The report also found that 78 sexual harassment complaints have been reported this year, 39 of them classified as criminal, nine as criminal non-sexual and 30 as harassment. Earlier this year Metro started an online reporting tool and public campaign against harassment; in late August, a man pleaded guilty to multiple counts of indecent exposure on Metro.
According to the report, the Anacostia Metro station on the Green Line has seen the most crime this year, with 113 reported incidents. College Park came in second with 54 and Gallery Place at third with 44.
