The Gza

GZA

TUESDAY

It’s a safe bet that if a member of seminal Staten Island rap collective Wu-Tang Clan is playing your town, they’re performing a beloved album that’s nearly twenty years old. Tonight at the Howard Theatre it’s GZA’s turn to go back to the well, playing Liquid Swords in its entirety. Killer Mike, and Bear Hands (These guys? What are they funny or something?) open. 8:00 p.m., $25.

>>DC9: Turbo Fruits, The Danvilles. 9:00 p.m., $10.

>>9:30: Passion Pit, Youngblood Hawke, Wild Belle, 7:00 p.m., Sold Out.

WEDNESDAY

Melbourne’s Twerps play the type of jingle-jangle pop their homeland made famous thirty years ago. For a certain type of pop enthusiast, the sound is just as undeniable now as it was back then. Joining them is Alex Bleeker of Real Estate at the Black Cat backstage. 8:00 P.M., $12.

>>9:30: Beach House, Poor Moon. 7:00 p.m., Sold Out.

>>U Street Music Hall: The Hold Steady play its first of two nights with Natural Child. 7:00 p.m., Sold Out.

>> The Hamilton: Mavis Staples. 7:30 p.m., $52-62.

THURSDAY

Two very different types of supergroups are in town tonight. Hardcore allstars OFF! bring their short bursts of aggression and lengthy stage banter to the Black Cat along with the appropriately tough sounding The Spits and Double Negative. 8:00 p.m., $17.

For those who prefer their collaborations a tad less abrasive, 9:30 will host Divine Fits, a new project bringing together two of (not so) indie rock’s most beloved voices: Spoon‘s Britt Daniel and Wolf Parade/Handsome Furs‘ Dan Boeckner. Also, the drummer from New Bomb Turks! Those interested should catch them now since it’s anyone’s guess when these three will be out touring again. 7:00 p.m., $20.

FRIDAY

Former Fleet Fox J. Tillman is at the Cat with his new project Father John Misty, one that sounds eerily familiar to, well, Fleet Foxes. He’s joined by former Vivian Girl Katy Goodman’s La Sera and Jeffertitti’s Nile. 9:00 p.m., $15.

>>Red Palace: Olivia Mancini & The Mates, Kavanaughs, Do-Likes. 9:00 p.m., $8.

>>9:30: Ben Kweller. 7:00 p.m., $22.

SATURDAY

Sure, it’s east to look back at the tsunami of garbage that was third-wave ska with a healthy dose of skepticism and cynicism. But tonight at 9:30, some of the genre’s most beloved acts roll into town, encouraging true believers to dust off their Moon Ska paraphernalia and dance. Local lifers The Pietasters headline along with a reunited Spring Heeled Jack and New York City’s The Pilfers. Murphy’s Kids open. 7:00 p.m., $15.

>>Rock and Roll Hotel: Savoir Adore, Royal Canoe, Santah. 9:00 p.m., $12.

SUNDAY

Des Ark

Start a very busy show going sabbath with a Positive Force benefit at Dance Institute of Washington (proceeds will go to the DIW) with Des Ark, War on Women, Fell Types, G.U.T.S., and The New Trust. 4:30 p.m., $7-10.

For the (greying) punks among us, finish the evening over at Black Cat getting back in touch with Fat Wreck Chords’ Lagwagon who roll into town with a caravan of likeminded openers including Useless ID, The Flatliners, and Dead to Me. 8:00 p.m., $20.

>>DC 9: Cheap Girls, The Frontbottoms, A Great Big Pile of Leaves. 8:00 p.m., $12.

>>Red Palace: Com Truise, Poolside, Bonde Do Role. 7:00 p.m., $17.

>>Fillmore Silver Spring: Say Anything, Murder by Death, The Sidekicks. 7:30 p.m., $16.50.

>>Rock and Roll Hotel: Langhorn Slim & The Law, The Last Bison. 8:00 p.m., $16.
