Supergroups are an easy sell, but usually end up sounding like the sum of their parts. In recent years groups like Wild Flag have been trying to buck those expectations. However, even the totally essential and amazing Wild Flag sounds like the best moments of Helium and Sleater-Kinney, (which is not necessarily a bad thing.) Enter Wild Flag label mates Divine Fits, a supergroup comprised of Spoon frontman Britt Daniel, Wolf Parade and Handsome Furs singer Dan Boeckner and rounded out by Sam Brown of the underrated New Bomb Turks.
The trio just released its debut album A Thing Called Divine Fits, a half-Daniel and half-Boeckner affair that fans of either band would enjoy. Boeckner’s tracks sound like Handsome Furs leftovers and Daniel’s tracks sound like Spoon songs, but each with a bit more bite. The album doesn’t reach of the stars, but it sounds like three dudes having a great time making great music.
Due to the band’s high profile members, Divine Fits don’t have to play to small venues, so Thursday night they will be at the 9:30 Club. Today’s Song of the Day, “Flaggin a Ride,” is one of Daniel’s highlights. The track could have easily fit on one of the last two Spoon records. The track has a soulful groove but foreboding guitars that complement Daniel’s falsetto vocals.
Divine Fits play Thursday at the 9:30 Club. Tickets are $20.
