Cat Power will be at the 9:30 Club tonight. The show is sold out.
MONDAY
It’s been six years since Chan Marshall, who performs as Cat Power, has released an album of original songs. Sun drops her forays into Memphis soul and Delta blues found on The Greatest and Jukebox to something more current. Awash in a cacophony of synthesizers, drum machines and Marshall’s unmistakable smokey croon, Sun often sounds like a welcome reinvention as she takes the stage at the 9:30 Club. Marshall will be joined by Xray Eyeballs and Willis Earl Beal. Doors at 7 p.m. Sold Out.
>>Howard Theatre: The Psychedelic Furs, The Lemonheads. 8 p.m., $30.
>>Black Cat: Laura Stevenson and the Cans, The Wild. 8 p.m., $12.
TUESDAY
Vermont’s Kyle Thomas, the shaggy-haired band leader of King Tuff, will bring his brand of fuzzed-out guitar licks to the Black Cat backstage. Off the heels of his well-received self-titled release, he’ll be joined by The Intelligence and Poor Moon, the sideproject of the Fleet Foxes Casey Wescott and Christian Wargo. Doors at 8 p.m., $12.
>>IOTA: Franz Nicolay (of The Hold Steady, World/Inferno Friendship Society, Against Me!). 8:30 p.m., $12.
>>Fillmore Silver Spring: Alanis Morrisette, Souleye. 7 p.m., $42.50-52.50.
WEDNESDAY
If you haven’t seen Titus Andronicus live, you should fix that mistake. Seriously. Following the towering, Civil War-inspired and 2010 favorite The Monitor, the New Jersey band will release their junior effort Local Business on Tuesday. While the band was reaching skyward with their first two releases, Local Business is a back-to-basics approach in the tradition of many blue-collar working bands from Jersey raised on a steady diet measured in equal parts The Bouncing Souls and Bruce Springsteen. They’ll be joined at the Rock And Roll Hotel by Baltimore’s Ceremony and True Head. Doors at 7 p.m., $20.
>>Birchmere: Aimee Mann, Ted Leo (solo show). Doors at 7:30 p.m., $49.50.
>>9:30 Club: Miike Snow, Niki and the Dove. Doors at 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Early show is Sold Out. Late show is $35.
>>Black Cat: The Sea and Cake, Matthew Friedberger. Doors at 8 p.m., $15.
>>Fillmore Silver Spring: Trey Anastasio Band. Doors at 7 p.m., $39.50.
THURSDAY
The Aimee Mann and Ted Leo two night residency at Birchmere might as well be a co-headlining gig. Both of the rock and roll lifers are coming off some of their strongest material of their careers — Mann released her eighth album, Charmer, last month and Leo is still touring behind 2010’s The Brutalist Bricks — and I would expect both Mann and Leo to reach deep into their catalogs. Despite that high pricetag, this appears to be worth the ticket — at least on paper. Doors at 7:30 p.m., $49.50.
>>The Hamilton: Escort, Nila Kay. Doors at 6:30 p.m., $17.
>>Jammin’ Java: Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s, The Gentleman Caller. Doors at 9:30 p.m., $15.
>>U Street Music Hall: Pantha du Prince, Lxsx Frxnk. Doors at 10 p.m., $10 in advance/$12 DOS.
>>DC 9: Those Darlins, Heavy Cream. Doors at 8 p.m., $12.
>>9:30 Club: Sharon Van Etten, Damien Jurado. Doors at 6 p.m., $18.
>>9:30 Club: Major Lazer. Doors at 10 p.m., Sold Out.
>>Black Cat: Dinosaur Jr., Shearwater. Doors at 8 p.m., $25 in advance/$30 DOS.
FRIDAY
A.C. Newman, one of the many band leaders in Canadian power-pop experts The New Pornographers, will return to the Black Cat behind his third solo album Shut Down The Streets with former D.C. resident and ex-Gorgie James singer Laura Marling and her latest project The Mynabirds. Doors at 9 p.m., $15 in advance/$18 DOS.
>>9:30 Club: Old 97’s, Salim Nourallah, Rhett Miller. Doors at 8 p.m., $25.
>>Howard Theatre: Dru Hill. Doors at 10:30 p.m., $27 in advance/$32 DOS.
SATURDAY
Alex Schaff, who performs under the moniker Yellow Ostrich, has a way with a loop pedal. Originally a solo project that often feels like one man in a room full of instruments on his earlier releases, his slick pop songs beam on their latest effort Strange Land when complimented with a full band. He’ll be joined on stage at the Black Cat backstage with Brooklyn’s Fort Lean. Doors at 9 p.m., $13 in advance/$15 DOS.
SUNDAY
The combination of lounge, new wave and bossa nova could be a disastrous mixture, especially when used solely for cover songs, but in the hands of French band Nouvelle Vague, it appears to work. They’ll be taking their smooth style to the 9:30 Club.
