Does Metro support Israel and want to defeat jihad? New ads that recently popped up through the system might make oblivious commuters think so, but the transit agency wants to be sure that everyone knows that it doesn’t share the opinions of the often politically charged ads that people pay to place in buses, trains and stations.

The Examiner reports that Metro has started adding disclaimers to controversial ads that urge support for Israel and a defeat of radical Muslims. The disclaimer reads: “This is a paid advertisement sponsored by [sponsor].The advertising space is a designated public forum and does not imply WMATA’s endorsement of any views express.”

The ads were placed in four stations earlier this month after a court ruled that security concerns expressed by Metro and federal officials weren’t enough to override the First Amendment. The ads, which have appeared in San Francisco and New York, have drawn fire for equating Muslims to savages.

Since the ads appeared, a number of other groups have bought and placed their own ads, starting something of a war of words in the region’s transit system. And while the anti-Muslim ads have been defaced in New York, the worst we’ve gotten here is a teacher placing Post-It notes over one of the ads in the Takoma Metro station.
