>> A Maryland pastor who favors same-sex marriage led some three dozen demonstrators in a protest yesterday outside Gallaudet University, where they demanded that the university reinstate a university administrator that was put on leave for signing a petition to put same-sex marriage on the ballot, writes the Post. (WJLA reports that a protest demanding the same thing but led by opponents of marriage equality took place at the same time down the road.) In a statement, Gallaudet President T. Alan Hurwitz said that he made the move to suspend Angela McCaskill due to her role as university’s chief diversity officer; he also said that he’s been holding discussions with gay student groups on how best to move forward.

>> D.C. Library advocates testified in favor of a bill yesterday that would extend library operating hours on weekdays and weekends, reports the Examiner. Under the plan proposed by Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2), branch libraries and the MLK Memorial Library would have to stay open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, and noon to 5 p.m. on weekends. Even though the advocates say that appreciate the idea, which would cost $10 million, they said they are nervous that it would become an unfunded mandate that would stretch staff members too thin.

WAMU reports that 88 of the 94 escalators throughout the system targeted for replacement have yet to be worked on, and the entire project will take another fives years. Metro officials say that in the meantime, escalator availability has improved—only 10 percent of the system’s escalators might be out on a given day, they say, down from 20 percent in the past.
