Five emergency shelters opened at 10 a.m. to offer safe harbor to District residents seeking relief from the intensifying effects of Hurricane Sandy. The shelters are located at facilities operated by the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation, which has closed its other locations today.
The shelters are located at:
- Guy Mason Recreation Center, 3600 Calvert Street NW, (202) 727-7736 (Ward 3)
- Emery Recreation Center, 5801 Georgia Avenue NW, (202) 576-3211 (Ward 4)
- North Michigan Park Recreation Center, 1333 Emerson Street NE, (202) 541-3526 (Ward 5)
- Deanwood Recreation Center, 1350 49th Street NE, (202) 671-3077 (Ward 7)
- Bald Eagle Recreation Center | 100 Joliet Street SW, (202) 671-5123 (Ward 8)
The Ward 5 shelter was originally scheduled to be staged at the Turkey Thicket Recreation Center at 1100 Michigan Avenue NE but was moved to North Michigan Park to accomodate the resumption of early voting at Turkey Thicket later this week.
