The Potomac River wasn’t the only waterway that breached its normal levels yesterday. Rock Creek also swelled way beyond its usual size thanks to Hurricane Sandy, flooding some of the surrounding park, including the roadways that traverse it.

Rock Creek Parkway and Beach Drive are still closed right now due to yesterdays flooding, U.S. Park Police said. Crews are still clearing fallen tress and other debris from the roads as waters recede.

At the storm’s peak, however, Rock Creek was less of a tributary and more resembled a rapid along the Colorado River, in the estimation of DCist contributor Pablo Maurer, who took the photographs above. Parking areas were swept under gushing water, and Rock Creek Park’s deer population scattered to avoid the expanding creek and falling debris.

Park Police gave no indication of when Rock Creek Parkway, Beach Drive and the other roads that course through the park might reopen. When asked when an estimate might be available, an officer replied, “Listen to WTOP.”
