The World Series plaudits might be in San Francisco, but at least some of the Washington Nationals are winning things. Adam LaRoche won the National League Gold Glove for first base last night, coming off a season in which he put in the best defensive performance of any player at his position.
LaRoche made only seven errors out of 1,367 chances to record an out during the 2012 season. Over the course of the season, the entire team committed just 94 errors, good for the fourth-best mark in the National League and eighth-best in all of baseball.
The Nationals and LaRoche are still talking about giving the 32-year-old first baseman a new contract. LaRoche also had a remarkable year at the plate, hitting for a .300 batting average while cracking 33 home runs, the most of any National League first baseman.
LaRoche is the second Nationals player to win a Gold Glove. Ryan Zimmerman won for third base in 2009.
Among LaRoche’s most memorable plays of 2012 was this leaping catch to eliminate the St. Louis Cardinals’—ugh—David Freese.
