A Metropolitan Police Department officer was stabbed earlier this morning while responding to a domestic violence call in the Brookland neighborhood, officials said. The suspect was fatally shot, and the officer was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening wounds.
Police responded to a domestic dispute on 17th Street NE between Monroe and Newton streets about 6:45 a.m., a department spokeswoman said. When officers entered, the suspect attacked one officer with a blade from behind; the wounded officer then fired and killed his assailant.
In an interview on WAMU, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the call came after the suspect assaulted his grandfather and that after police entered the residence, the suspect stabbed one of the officers. Lanier said the officer suffered multiple lacerations.
“The last thing any officer wants to do is have to use deadly force,” Lanier told WAMU.
At a press conference at the John A. Wilson Building where the city unveiled revised fines for traffic violations, Lanier said the officer who was wounded is a 10-year MPD veteran and is recovering from injuries to his head and neck.
“He’s a very lucky guy to survive the attack,” Lanier said.
